Is there a way to more-faithfully collect what one lives and feels in specific and significant moments through technology and art?
I was invited by INDI, an interactive technology studio based in France, to ideate and create an artwork that could contain meaningful experiences of their visitors, using their actual recorded brain data in real interactions.

Overview
At INDI’s latest art installation Mental Translations, the visitors were able to see their own brain activity translated into light while watching a painting in real time.
The studio is now seeking to take a more personal and emotional approach, therefore we created an artwork, a portable device that plays the visitor's individual experience in scientifically and artistically ways.
The resulting piece, titled Woman Watching Art, plays 56 seconds of a visitor discovering an abstract painting by the painter Anne Marie Rennan.
Hole patterns, string geometries, and light moving along hollowed panels portraying four seconds at a time, all depict the internal, neural experience of the portrayed woman; they are unique to her and to what she lived and felt in that unrepeatable moment.

What concepts must the artwork represent?
a recording of feels and thoughts,
a different kind of portrait,
a faithful memory.
A mental translation in a container.
3 IDEATE
How can we materialize these concepts?
The materials, techniques, shapes and colors were all defined by the characteristics of the experience of the woman watching the painting.
For all the aesthetic decisions it was important to understand the scope and limits of the technologies we used: the brain data reader headsets, the microcomputer, the electronic installations and the software.
